Realism

Realism: 1830-1870

Popular in the mid-nineteenth century, Realism was a movement in which the artists moved away from Neoclassical influences and the theatricality of Romanticism to paint commonplace scenes exactly as they appeared. Usually this involved a moral or socio-political intent, illustrating unattractive or everyday subjects.

Leading realists were: Gustave Courbet, Jean-Francois Millet, Honore Daumier and John Singer Sargeant.
