Violette Szabo. By a cruel stroke of luck, Violette and her companions came up against the advance guard of an entire German armoured division, racing towards the Normandy beaches. In the shoot-out which followed, Violette, though wounded, ran into a cornfield, only be let down by her ankles, weakened by parachute training, which gave way and left her helpless. She was captured only when her last round of amunition had been fired. Original artwork for illustration on p31 of Look and Learn issue no 947 (15 March 1980). Lent for scanning by The Gallery of Illustration.
