Native American Indian of Pawtuxet tribe who befriended the pilgrims; died November 1622, Chatham Harbor, Plymouth Colony (now Chatham, Mass., USA); sold into slavery by Thomas Hunt (one of John Smith's men), escaped and returned home in 1619; interpreter for Edward Winslow, Pilgrim representative, during negotiations with Massasoit, chief of the Wampanoag; fluent in English;
